We foster students who can offer solutions for both technological and business challenges of Japan’s industrial society. Our unique education system focuses on fisheries science, paper industries, and manufacturing (monozukuri) as Ehime Prefecture’s major industries, providing students with the skill set they need to open up industrial futures based on the SDGs framework.

Fisheries Science Course

Fisheries and aquaculture are becoming more and more important in the context of the world’s population explosion. In contrast, the decline of Japan’s fisheries industry, including in Ehime Prefecture, is an increasingly serious issue. Research and the systematic human resource development to promote the fisheries industry and fishing villages is thus urgently needed.

In this course you will learn theoretical and practical aspects of fisheries science comprehensively and in-depth, based on the three specialization areas “Life science”, “Environmental science”, and “Social science”. We offer a variety of systematic lectures including a wide variety of fieldwork, internships, experiments, and practical training in Ehime Prefecture’s Nanyo area, enabling you to gain practical knowledge and develop skills to solve problems in the local fisheries industry.

Almost all students who take our course relocate their activity base to the South Ehime Fisheries Research Center in Ainan town to learn the major subjects from the third grade.

Paper Industry Course

The paper industry is facing a critical shortage of skilled technicians in recent years brought on by the globalization of the economy and rapid aging of the population. To prepare for the future of this increasingly complex and diverse industry, there is a demand for research and development functions aimed at further development of the paper industry to be bolstered, as well as for the cultivation of human resources needed to provide support. Students in this course study technology-oriented subjects, including the technical theory of papermaking, along with specialized subjects covering management and marketing relevant to technological management. A range of field trips to companies and practical training conducted to facilitate understanding of paper and paper production facilities in conjunction with this curriculum serves to equip students with practical skills relevant to paper product creation and management through a hands-on approach engaging all five senses. From the specialized education introduced in the third year of the course onward, the Paper Industry Innovation Center of Ehime-university (PIICE) in Shikokuchūō-shi City provides a new base for studies.

Design and Manufacturing Course

The manufacturing industry in Ehime Prefecture is facing major issues in responding to the shortage of skilled technicians brought on by factors including globalization and the increasing complexity of production processes, as well as rapid aging of the population. Accordingly, the Ehime Prefecture manufacturing industry is in need of engineers capable of drawing up visions of sustainability that take into account manufacturing processes from design through production along with managerial and environmental factors, as well as explaining such processes and their results. In this course, students will pursue the study of specialized fields including design, processing, control, and sensing, as well as corresponding experiments, practical training, and exercises. In addition to this, students will engage in project-based learning, attempting to resolve technical issues facing the regional industry, to equip themselves with practical skills exhibiting consistent consideration of all stages from design and production through marketing. Click here for Design and Manufacturing Course website

Major Research Themes

Fisheries Science Course:

Promotion of fisheries industry through marketing and distribution analysis of cultured fish and education on fish-eating culture

Research on aquaculture technologies for the newly cultured fish “kawakwaka (Euthynnus affinis)”

Studies on early detection and measures against harmful algae bloom and fish diseases

Paper Industry Course:

Research on the effective use of cellulose nanofiber

Developing paper devices for use in medical testing

Developing incinerated paper sludge ash utilization technology

Environmental cleanup using functional paper

Design and Manufacturing Course:

Developing support technologies for manufacturing and production in regional industries

Examining the sustainability of traditional technologies with AI, IoT, etc.

Increasing efficiency in the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries industry with robotics technology

Assessing the quality of agricultural and marine products with sensing technology

Learn practical skills through onsite education!
